Netflix, Comcast Near MLB Rights Deal as ESPN Exits
Netflix and Comcast are finalizing agreements to acquire Major League Baseball broadcasting rights, filling the void left by Disney's ESPN. The streaming giant is poised to secure the Home Run Derby for $35 million annually, while Comcast's NBCUniversal will pay roughly $200 million per year for game broadcasts. Combined, these deals WOULD replace 43% of ESPN's former $550 million yearly commitment.
MLB is strategically fragmenting its media rights across multiple platforms. Sunday Night Baseball, Wild Card playoffs, and other key properties remain in negotiation. The league's pivot reflects broader industry trends—traditional cable declines meet streaming's ascendance, with Netflix making its first major foray into live sports.
